Bargaining Update – January 8

The CAAT-A Bargaining Team and the College Employer Council (CEC) reached a settlement late in the evening on January 7th, eliminating any ongoing threat of labor action in this round of bargaining.

As I understand it, both sides were able to reach agreement on several items (more specific details to follow). All remaining issues—including changes to workload language, job security, wages, and the length of the contract—will now proceed to mediation-arbitration with William Kaplan.

There will be several additional days of mediation before Arbitrator Kaplan makes a final decision on the contract. A tentative timeline suggests that a new contract could be in place by late summer.

This outcome would not have been possible without the support of the membership. The solidarity demonstrated in the strike mandate vote locally — 82% participation and 84.4% in favor of labor action if necessary — was critical in securing the removal of many of the employer’s concessions before mediated arbitration begins.

We will be scheduling a membership meeting in the coming weeks to share more information with you as it becomes available.
